Lobo fans grew up knowing and loving Mike Roberts as "The Voice of The Lobos." Last week that voice was taken off the airwaves.

At first I wondered what I had gotten myself into. I had asked for an interview from the recently released Mike Roberts and the answer was a golden-throated “Yes, I’d be delighted.”  Mike Roberts the VOICE of the Lobos for the past 41 years had agreed to an interview.  We arranged to meet at my law office and Mike walked and smiled the easy smile that would come to define his career in sports broadcasting. Mike was his usual affable self.  As you will see in the interview, Mike is, has been, and always will be a Lobo. Mickey (yes his “real” name, from Mickey Cochrane of the Detroit Tigers) is special to Lobo fans. He is the “Walter Cronkite” for the Lobo Nation. He whipped us into a frenzy of Lobo Fever when UNM was on top and comforted us when the Lobos broke our collective hearts.

As we sifted through the cards and other memorabilia I assembled from my years as a Lobo fan, the time whizzed by. Mike had a memory and anecdote for each and every player and coach that I conjured up. After an hour or so the memory on my recorder was all used up. As we parted I couldn’t help but feel slightly giddy at what I just had the pleasure of doing; rubbing elbows with a LIVING LEGEND OF LOBO SPORTS! Here’s to you Mike, may you live forever in our collective hearts and minds as the greatest play by play announcer in Lobo history!

We are going to break this down into a few days worth of stories for all to enjoy…
