As we reported late last week Devonta visited the UNM this past weekend where he said he made his decision. "I felt like I was home the moment I got there," says Tabannah. "I want to get away from home, but not so far I would feel homesick, wherever I decided I would go, I wanted to feel like I was home, that is the Coach Locksley, the coaches, and all the players made me feel, like I was at home. So my mom and I started talking and I decided I wanted to be a Lobo."
Coach Locksley was also a big reason Devonta why he chose UNM. "Coach Locks and my mom go way back, as well as my high school coach who is a father figure to me," says Tabannah. "I really like the way he handles himself an his attitude of being a winner. Coach Locks is where I'm from he understands the struggle of being a black man, of being from DC, he has been through what I've been through, he knows about economics here and surviving. I want to play for a man like that."
In my conversation with Devonta it was very obvious that he has some serious goals that he has laid out for himself. "I'm going to be on the field next year when we play Oregon," says a very confident Tabannah. "That's a fact! I'm a competitive guy both on and off the field. I'm a hard worker that is a playmaker and I will be on the field when play Oregon next year."
In order to make that goal come true Devonta told me that he feels he needs to put weight on and that all begins with his eating habits. "Right now I'm weighing around 159. I want to put some more weight on and that all starts with my eating habits," says Tabannah. "That is the thing I have to work on, I need more weight so I'm able to dish out more punishment."
For the record Devonta Tabannah chose New Mexico over Buffalo, Central Michigan, Ohio, and Akron amongst others, and he has a message for all Lobo fans. "Come support us, we are going to have some fun!"
Tabannah also lets Lobo fans in on a horribly kept secret. "We are going to get a lot of DC and Maryland players out here and we are going to give the fans their money's worth."
Welcome to New Mexico Devonta!
