The
University of New Mexico’s Women’s Basketball team held a scrimmage for
Lobo
fans tonight and TheRedMenace.com learned that not only were there
quite a few
Lobo fans in attendance but the Lobos also had 2010 recruit Sam Martin
of
Chaparral HS, (Parker CO) in the famed Pit!

Sam Martin on the right watches Friday Night's Lobo Scrimmage in The
Pit with her family!
Sam
Martin is a 6’2 178 Small/Power forward with a wingspan of 6’5”. Last
season
Sam was named 2nd team Rocky Mtn. News and Preps at the 5A
level, as
well as being named to the Honorable Mention All-Colorado team by the
Denver
Post.
Last
season Sam Martin finished the season averaging 15.1 PPG, 7.7 rebounds,
3
blocks, and 7 steals a game. With eye popping numbers like this it is
no wonder
that the UNM coaching staff was excited to see Sam on an un-official
visit.
I
had a chance to speak to Sam about her trip to Albuquerque, “This is my
first
visit to UNM and it is going really well,” says Martin. “We walked
around
campus today and I was able to meet with the coaches and players, and
now I get
to catch tonight’s scrimmage.”
Once
again Lobo fans come through for their hoops team as those in
attendance really
impressed Sam. “I like how this whole town backs up this program. The
atmosphere is really cool and I like it,” exclaimed Martin as the fans
started
filing into The Pit and one of the reasons Martin said “I t is one of
the
reasons I was looking at UNM… I just love the fan base here!”
Going
back to Sam Martin’s numbers last year I really wanted to gauge what
kind of
player she is and what women’s hoops fans can hope to see from her at
the next
level. “I like to do a lot of things on the court,” says Martin. “I
shot the
three, post up, but I also like the15 footer as well.” Martin said she
want to
continue to “improve her outside game and be more of a threat form the
outside.”
With
her numbers and size it is no doubt that this Colorado product will
continue to
receive the attention from plenty of coaches. While she isn’t ready to
start
naming many names right now, we know that Sam Martin has been on other
unofficial visits this summer and fall and has really started to hear
from
schools in both the Big 10 and Big 12, while receiving interest from
UNM, along
with CSU and Wyoming.
