Per NCAA rules the Lobos had to spend another day
at
practice sans pads, still it is football… LOBO FOOTBALL! So I was
rushing to
the Rock Shop, unfortunately, I was held up in traffic so I showed up a
little
late, and to my horror the doors were locked! Luckily, we were able to
sneak in
through the back door, and just in time to catch some seven on seven
drills.

Quin makes the play of the day!
Obviously
without pads, I focused once again on wide
receivers, and what arguably is the greatest strength of the Lobo
football team
this upcoming year… Cornerbacks!
The
Wright Stuff!
When
talking about corners at UNM this year it starts with
DeAndre Wright (1st team MWC 2007) and Glover Quin
(Honorable
mention MWC 2007) Since moving from safety two years ago DeAndre has
become an
unbelievable corner, great instincts to the ball, and just a tenacious
player
when the ball is in the air. The past 2 days of spring shows that
DeAndre isn’t
about let up as he has taken on everyone of the Lobo wide outs
On
the other side Glover Quin is another shutdown corner.
Coming off injury plagued season last year, Glover said today that no
football
player is ever 100% but today he feels as good physically as he ever
has, and
once again he showed that this afternoon both in The Rock Shop and out
in the
stadium, as unofficially I have Glover with one INT, and a couple of
pass break
ups, including one where the vertical jump record holder used all of
his 40.5”
vertical leap to spear a pass and knock it away.
And
just when you think things can’t get better, the Lobos
have some nice depth at the corner position as Soph. Jerome Jenkins
picked up
valuable experience last season due to Glover’s injuries last year. The
young
man from Houston TX is ready to step up and make plays as his baptism
in fire
took place last season vs. Arizona!

Jerome Jenkins
As
far as wide receivers today, how about Daryl Jones?
Didn’t really mention his name yesterday, but today the young man came
out and
made some plays, snaring a TD, making some nice catches in traffic.
Also,
Jermaine McQueen had a decent day on the practice field, a couple of
drops kept
it from being a spectacular day, as he snared a couple of nice pass,
using his
speed.
Side Notes
I love
the way James Wright runs. The guy looks like he has
skates on, very very smooth.
How
about Tate Smith? Walk-on QB from Permian TX… Smith
displayed some nice arm strength this afternoon. As he learns the
position
more, it will be interesting to see where he fits in with the depth
chart.
Offensive Player of Practice
#5
WR Daryl Jones
Like
I said he was making plays. The Lobos are looking to
Daryl to step up this season, and today he did so.
Defensive Player of Practice
#19
Glover Quin
Quin’s
vertical spearing of a pass, combined with his
interception, and good positioning showed that this young man is ready
to come
out and have a special season! Also, Glover crashed into a developing
WR screen taking on blockers and receiver breaking up the play.
