"I'm A Lobo"

Jonathan Mader

Another "Judge" Chavez player commits to hometown New Mexico.

Cibola HS (Albuquerque, NM) Coach Ralph "Judge" Chavez has been the high school coach of many young men that have ended up playing and going on to star for the University of New Mexico. So it was no surprise to us earlier this summer that Coach Chavez had his Cibola Cougars out to Lobo Football Camp.

One of the young men that people knew about from the jump was 6-4 215 QB Jonathan Mader. While it was 7 on 7 aka no contact, Mader displayed a nice arm and the ability to make good decisions with the ball, and Jonathan left Rocky Long's camp with a scholarship offer in hand.

This fall Mader showed that his scholarship offer was well deserved as he led the District Champion Cibola Cougars to a 10-1 regular season throwing 22 touchdowns to 8 interceptions and averaging 139 yards per game. With his size Jonathan is a tough guy to bring down as he averaged 30 yards per game on the ground including three touchdowns.

Well today we learned that Jonathan Mader has committed to play for the University of New Mexico, so we called down to Cibola HS and talk to Coach Chavez and ‘lo and behold who is right there with him? None other than the man of the day himself… I knew that Mader had offers from both New Mexico and New Mexico State and was being looked at by other colleges in the area so I asked Jonathan why UNM?

Being a hometown kid, watching the Lobos and seeing how the program has advanced over the years. Going to the camp this summer was really impressive as I was able to talk and work with the coaches. I'm really excited to work with them more in the future.

In the spring when talked with Coach Chavez he told us how Jonathan Mader wasn't just physically talented, but a very smart football player, that Jonathan liked to watch game film and break things down for the Cibola staff. Judge Chavez also said that Mader enjoys working hard. So with that in mind I asked Mader what he felt he had to work on to be a quality D-I player.

I've just got to continue work hard. I know a lot of player change positions once they go to the collegiate level and I'm open minded so if they ask me to change positions, I'll do that as well. I'll play and do whatever they tell me or wherever they need me to play.

I was kind of blown away by this as I thought that Jonathan wanted to be a quarterback no matter what.

I'm going to start out as a quarterback and see how that works out, but I just want to do what's best for my new team…

It is always refreshing when you talk to a young man about his skills and his opportunity to see a young man that is not only intelligent but humble as well. At UNM "the team" concept is always talked about. Obviously Rocky Long's newest recruit understands this concept and is willing to live by it.

TheRedMenace.com would like to congratulate Jonathan Mader on his choice and we look forward to watching him on the practice fields the next few years.
