With the regular basketball season starting Friday night, I was able to make it out to watch the Lobos last full practice as they prepare for this weekend’s Women’s Sports Foundation Challenge.
The first game Friday night at 8pm they will take on the Broncos of Western Michigan, the next day Saturday at 8pm they will take on the Flyers of Dayton, and finally concluding with a game verses the Wildcats of Northwestern. The first 3 games with be a test in and of it self to start a season with three games in three days is know easy task, for any team.
Watching practice this afternoon, four things that stuck out to me
Amy Beggin is the floor leader of this team, she is the next generation of Flanagan’s 40 minute ladies. She has really improved her shooting ability. At one point during today’s practice while the starters were working against the 3-2 zone Amy hit three straight three’s making it look so easy.
Jessica Kielpinski is going to be a special player for the Lobos as she brings a big strong powerful body into the paint and is not afraid to throw her body around to score and get any boards.
Porche Torrance in my opinion is the best athlete on this team she, use her speed and her body to slip past screens and get around people boxing her out. She also uses her long lean body to get into the passing lanes and get her hands on to steal and swat the ball.
Dionne Marsh and Brandi Kimble are the leaders of this team on and off the court. Dionne is set for a big season again, while Brandi will be one of the top defenders in the MWC.
