Meet Sara Halasz

Posted Sep 21, 2007

With the help of KRQE Van Tate I was able to get a quick interview with Sara Halasz from Lakes HS (Fort Lewis, Washington). We squeezed as much into the few minutes we had with Sara asking her who was recruiting her, how her AAU season went, as well as what type of player she is and what she can bring to a D-I team.

Sara said her top three schools recruiting her are New Mexico, Utah and Boise State. The Washington native took a trip last weekend to Utah, were she said she enjoyed her self. She is in New Mexico this weekend and will attend the Lobo vs. Sacramento State football game, as well as the shirt and skins game this Saturday afternoon (roughly 4:00pm and open to the public). Sara said she is planning on making a trip to Boise as well.

Sara said she was part of an AAU team out of Seattle that traveled mostly around the Northwest winning a few tournaments. She enjoyed the summer and felt that her game did improve. So the obvious question is what kind of a player is she?

Sara said her main asset is “her athleticism.” Adds Sara, “the best part of my game is getting up and down the court with speed and I can easily get into a transition.” Sara also told the Red Menace, “I can shoot from anywhere on the court and drive to the hoop when need be, or just pull up and hit the mid-range jumper.” Sara added that the main thing she would like to improve upon before getting to college is consistency from behind the arc.

Sara said the reasons she wanted to come check out UNM is that she really felt comfortable talking to Coach Flanagans’ coaching staff, Sara also said she had hear a lot about New Mexico and The Pit, but she just wanted to come check it out for herself. Final she also noticed Amanda Best was on the New Mexico roster. Sara knew Amanda from her AAU time playing in AAU.

Sara would be a nice “get” for New Mexico. Obviously she is a very talented player averaging over 16 points per game last season as well as being named Western Cascade Conference All-League Girls Basketball player of the year. As an added bonus, when you can beat out conference rival Utah for a player of Sara ’s caliber that makes it that much sweeter for UNM.

TheRedMenace.com would like to thank Sara Halasz for her time and wish her luck during her senior year of high school. Once again thanks to Van Tate for helping us reach Sara this afternoon. Catch Van weeknights on KRQE Channel 13.
