This weekend over 300 high school players converged on the University of New Mexico football practice fields and inside Rocky Long stadium for the his annual Rocky Long football camp, and for the 5th straight year we made a couple of trips out to speak to some of the young players and possible future Lobos…
Yesterday I spoke with Cibola HS (Albuquerque NM) quarterback Jonathan Mader about his summer and how recruiting is going for him this season.
The Cougar QB was recently ranked as the 2nd best quarterback in the state of New Mexico by PrepNewMexico.com and after watching him play during this weekend's 7 on 7 tournament during this weekend's camp, watching his video clips, and talking to Cibola Head Coach Judge Chavez there is no doubt in my mind that the ranking is justified.
Obviously you can't get a complete look at a player's game in a 7 on 7 setting as players can't hit one another, but when looking at QB's you can see the arm strength and decision making and Mader definitely has that. According to Coach Chavez not only does Jonathan possess these traits, but also what makes him a special player is that "he is a student of the game."
Here is some footage of Jonathan Mader during this weekend's camp. Just some thoughts in the first part of the footage you see Mr. Mader hooking up with Cibola teammate WR Paul Simpson, unfortunately for the Cibola team Mr. Simpson was taking SAT on Saturday. One of the other players you'll see receiving some passes is Los Alamos' ATH
The well traveled Mader is currently being shown interest by UTEP, Arizona St., and New Mexico. At the time of our interview Jonathan had no offers, but this morning when I went back out to the camp Jonathan's father told me, "we have a meeting with Coach Long at 11:00."
Since that time TheRedMenace.com has learned that Jonathan Mader has officially been offered a scholarship to the University of New Mexico.
