2004 Opening Game Starters Are

Starters are in place. Let's play some football!

All during fall players were fighting for positions.  Most of the “heat” was directed at the starting quarterback job battle between Kole Mc Kamey and Tali Ena, but once there were plenty of other battles going on.  On Sunday, TheRedMenace.com picked up a depth chart listing the starters for UNM’s upcoming game vs. Washington State on Friday Sept. 3rd.  Barring any last minute changes, namely if a player got fat and sassy after being named starter, this is the starting day roster!

The hotly contested battles were:

Quarterback 

Kole went in a favorite after spring ball and early in fall camp Coach Long named Kole a starter.  Tali moves into the 2nd string position with Tye Butler backing both up.  Biggest surprise is Tye Butler. It looks like he added height and weight over the summer and looks like a new man.

Quick Tackle

 Terrence Pennington picked up the job, having lost a lot of gut over the summer and the big man looks ready to have a superb junior season beating out spring incumbent Brian Humphreys.

Quick Guard

Possibly the hottest contested battle out there.  Incoming JUCO transfer Bo Greer looked to have the slot locked up but in the end it was the hard work and flat out power of Fred Tucker that gets him the starting job!

Wide Receiver 

The JUCO transfer fought off Chris Brawley, Marcus Smith, and Curtis Flakes for the starting nod.  AC came in very strong, quick, and ready to play!

Safety   

Art Haynes wins the job, though Kevin Walton did give him a battle.  Look for both young men to get plenty of playing time, but that Art Haynes just looks like a prototypical professional safety.  Not bad for a basketball playa…
