A crowd of about 4000 fans came out to greet the MWC
tournament champion UNM women’s basketball team tonight at the first Howl just
for the women’s team. Coach
Flanagan was introduced to a standing ovation as the team was introduced by
position and class.
After a few minutes of warm-ups the team began a
scrimmage of Cherry versus Silver.
The Cherry team consisted of Abbie Letz, Mandi Moore, Melissa Forest,
Jenny Shetters, Julie Briody, and Lauren McLeod. The Silver team was Katie Montgomery,
Judy Vogt, Jana Francis, Wande Olude, Fatima Maddox, and Lindsey Arndt. Timi E-Nunu sat out due to a minor
injury.

Melissa Forest led all scorers with 15 points, including three baskets
from long range. Jenny Shetters
scored eight tough points from the paint. Almost everyone scored. Wande Olude showed some serious muscle
with strong put-backs and rebounds, and Judy Vogt was showing her stuff with
some snappy passing to former high school teammate Lindsey Arndt.
Julie Briody turned some heads as she sank ten three pointers in a row as
the Lady Lobos smoked a team from the local TV media including John Salazar and
Mike Powers Mandi Moore and Abbie Letz were the other members against the
media. Mandi has been working
on that three point stroke since Coach Flanagan added that “bunny-hop” two
summers ago.
There was an amusing sequence where two Lobo players and
fans from the crowd competed as to which team could complete a lay-up, a free
throw, and a three pointer in the least time. The team of Lindsey Arndt, Mandi Moore
and a young fan named Lindsey won the day.
I was waiting for that 40-year old fat guy from Santa Fe to show-up and
try to scrimmage, but no such luck.
After the amusement, the team sat down and signed
autographs for at least 2000 fans.
If they have trouble taking notes in class it will be due to hand
cramps. Timi E-Nunu seemed
impressed by all the attention.

The Lady Lobos will have an open scrimmage next Saturday evening October
25 at 7:00 PM. Admission is free
and the public is welcome. Tickets
to rounds one and two of the women’s NCAA tournament go on sale to the public
Monday, October 20, 2003. Season
tickets have set an all time record at over 7500 so far. Tickets are still for sale and the Pizza
Hut promotion is still available as well.
15,000
screaming basketball fans can’t be wrong.
Come on down and get in on the excitement as our Lady Lobos go on to
another conference championship and NCAA appearance.
