QB Darrell Colbert Jr. – Houston Lamar
2014 – Recruited by Texas Tech, Washington State, Purdue
Though his team fell to Allen in the Class 5A Division I game, Colbert reiterated what the FOX Sports NEXT team saw in him as a freshman, which is a playmaker. Give him an inch of daylight, and he will make something happen. He ended up with 126 yards on the ground and another 207 yards passing for three total touchdowns. Look for this off season to be quite busy for this young man.
QB Jerrod Heard – Denton Guyer
2014 – Committed to Texas
Seven touchdowns. No, this is not a typo. The last time a performance had that many scores involved was Aledo running back Johnathan Gray (8 TDs), who just happens to be at the same school Heard is committed to. Heard scored five rushing (143 yards) and two by pass (189 yards). Most impressive was his ability to make plays when the game was on the line.
RB Adam Taylor – Katy
2013 – Committed to Nebraska
With 277 yards on 30 carries and five touchdowns, Taylor was for sure making this list. Talk about a record-breaking season for Taylor, capped off by a 35-24 win over Cedar Hill in the Class 5A Division II game. Many wondered how Taylor would bounce back after missing last season with an injury. Check his numbers for this year for the answer.
ATH Nick Harvey – Lancaster
2014 – Committed to Texas A&M
Harvey played nearly every skilled position on the field, but his best statistical was his five catches for 47-yard performance. He added a couple stops on defense and did some work as a quarterback. But in the end, Cedar Park’s grinding offense and tough defense was enough to come away with the win.
DE Matt Dimon – Katy
2013 – Committed to Oklahoma
Every week through the postseason, Dimon seemed to be get better. His presence up front demands attention and in the state game, he was in on five stops and had 1.5 sacks.
RB Laquvionte Gonzalez – Cedar Hill
2013 – Committed to Texas A&M
He did not get a lot of touches in the game against Katy, but when Gonzalez got his hands on the ball, something happened. And more than a few times it brought his fans to their feet. He ended the game with 123 yards of offense, most of which came from a couple of impressive screen plays that nearly went for touchdowns.
WR Ellis Jefferson – Denton Guyer
2013 – Committed to Arizona State
If the ball was in the air, Jefferson was on the receiving end. He ended up with a couple of nice touchdown catches, one of which he got loose for a 71-yard strike from heard. All in all, Jefferson is a big-play receiver and had 176 yards on the day in the win.
BONUS: FB Alex Fisher – Katy
2013 – Uncommitted
Okay so some may be asking why is a full back on the list. Aside from the fact that Fisher had 43 of his own yards, ask his teammate Taylor how critical it is to have a solid full back in front of him.
